Borage oil comes from the seeds of the borage plant. It supplies a meaningful amount of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid. People take it mainly to help keep skin hydrated and flexible, and to ease everyday joint stiffness. Softgels and liquid forms are common. Taking it with food improves how well your body absorbs the fatty acids.
Choose only products that are certified free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). These compounds damage the liver. Do not use borage oil while pregnant or breastfeeding. It may stimulate the uterus, and even PA-free oils carry risks during these periods.
Borage oil can slow blood clotting. Anyone on blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, or scheduled for surgery should be cautious and speak with a doctor before starting.
