Capric acid is a medium-chain fatty acid (C10:0) from coconut and palm kernel oils. It makes up a large part of MCT oil, but MCT oil is a triglyceride mixture, not pure capric acid. Supplements provide capric acid as part of an MCT oil blend.
The body converts capric acid rapidly to ketones for energy. People following ketogenic or low-carb diets use it, and athletes take it as a quick energy source. You consume capric acid by taking MCT oil, typically mixed into beverages, smoothies, or food.
Start with a small dose, like 1 teaspoon, and build up slowly to avoid stomach upset. Large amounts can cause cramping or diarrhea. No well-documented drug interactions are known.
