Cascara sagrada extract concentrates the dried bark of *Rhamnus purshiana*. Manufacturers standardize it to cascarosides, the active compounds. This gives a reliable laxative effect compared to whole bark preparations.
For occasional constipation, use the extract for no more than 7 consecutive days. Taking it at bedtime usually produces a bowel movement within 6 to 12 hours. Longer use can lead to dependence.
Stimulant laxatives may cause abdominal cramping and electrolyte imbalances, especially potassium loss. Prolonged use reduces effectiveness. Avoid cascara sagrada if you take digoxin or other cardiac glycosides, because potassium depletion can interfere with them. Do not use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or when you have abdominal pain, intestinal blockage, or undiagnosed digestive symptoms.
