Guggul

Guggul, an Ayurvedic herb, has limited evidence for health benefits and a risk of liver toxicity.

Guggul is a resin from the Commiphora mukul tree, historically used in Ayurveda. Some promote it for cholesterol support, but mainstream research yields mixed results and does not confirm this benefit.

A typical dose is 250 to 500 mg twice daily of an extract standardized to 2.5 to 7.5% guggulsterones, taken with food. Potency and quality vary widely between products.

Guggul has been linked to liver injury in some cases. The herb can interfere with thyroid hormone balance and enhance the effects of blood thinners like warfarin, increasing bleeding risk.
