Hoodia is a succulent from southern Africa. For centuries, San hunters chewed the plant to curb hunger on long treks. Supplement makers later promoted it for weight loss, though strong clinical proof remains scarce.
People usually take hoodia as an extract or capsule 30 to 60 minutes before meals with water. Doses shift from product to product, and manufacturers do not standardize the active compounds reliably.
Side effects can include shifting blood pressure, a faster heart rate, and raised liver enzymes. The plant may clash with diabetes or blood pressure drugs. Avoid hoodia during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
