Monk fruit sweetener is an extract from Siraitia grosvenorii. The fruit contains sweet antioxidant compounds called mogrosides. Manufacturers concentrate these mogrosides and remove natural sugars and fibers. The result is a zero-calorie sweetener that is roughly 150 to 200 times sweeter than sugar.
People use it as a straight sugar swap to cut calories and avoid blood sugar spikes. Because the extract holds no fructose or glucose, it does not raise blood glucose or insulin. This makes it a go-to for low-carb, keto, and sugar-conscious diets.
You can find it as a granulated powder or liquid drop. Stir it into coffee, bake with it, or add it to sauces. Most formulations taste clean and lack the bitter edge found in some other natural sweeteners.
Large doses sometimes cause mild stomach upset. The FDA recognizes it as generally safe (GRAS). If you have an allergy to gourds (the Cucurbitaceae family), be cautious before using.
