Marshmallow root extract is a concentrated form of the Althaea officinalis plant. It contains a high amount of mucilage. This mucilage turns into a gel-like layer when mixed with water. It coats irritated mucous membranes in the throat and digestive tract, providing temporary relief.
People use the extract to soothe the throat, ease dry coughs, and calm the stomach. A typical dose is a liquid extract diluted in water, or a capsule, taken between meals so the mucilage contacts more surface area.
The mucilage can slow how your body absorbs other medications. Space the extract at least one hour apart from any oral medicine.
