Molybdenum

Molybdenum is a trace mineral that helps activate enzymes involved in breaking down sulfur compounds, purines, and certain toxins.

Molybdenum helps several key enzymes do their job. It keeps sulfite oxidase, xanthine oxidase, and aldehyde oxidase running. Those enzymes process sulfur-containing amino acids, break down purines from DNA and RNA, and help clear other compounds from the body. You only need tiny amounts, and a normal diet makes deficiency unlikely.

Legumes, grains, nuts, and leafy greens supply plenty of molybdenum for most people. Single-ingredient supplements rarely make sense outside of specific metabolic disorders like sulfite oxidase deficiency or very restricted diets. Using it as a general wellness add-on has little backing beyond basic enzyme support.

Typical supplemental doses land between 25 and 150 mcg per day, often inside a multivitamin. Take it with or without food, any time of day. Exceeding the tolerable upper limit of 2,000 mcg per day offers no benefit and brings real risks.

High intake can spike uric acid through xanthine oxidase activity, possibly triggering gout-like symptoms in susceptible people. Large doses also disrupt copper balance and may cause copper deficiency. Anyone with kidney disease or a history of gout should be careful.
