Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) has soft, fuzzy leaves and tall flower spikes. Herbal traditions use the leaves and flowers mainly for respiratory support.
People take mullein tea or tincture to soothe irritated mucous membranes in the throat and lungs and to help loosen mucus. It sees use during seasonal congestion or dry coughs. The herb can also be infused in oil for topical ear drops, but internal forms are the most common supplement.
Allergic reactions are possible in those sensitive to plants in the figwort family (Scrophulariaceae). Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well documented. Check with a healthcare professional for persistent respiratory symptoms.
