Psyllium is a bulk forming fiber from the husks of Plantago ovata seeds. Mixing it into water creates a gel that adds bulk to stool and softens it, supporting regular bowel movements.
People use psyllium to ease occasional constipation and help maintain cholesterol levels already in the normal range. For heart health benefits, it works best alongside a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
Stir one serving into a full glass of water or another liquid and drink it right away, then sip more fluids throughout the day. At least 8 ounces of liquid per serving is a must. Without enough water, psyllium can swell in the throat and cause choking or a blockage. Take medications at least two hours before or after psyllium, because the fiber gel can slow down absorption of some drugs.
