Serratiopeptidase is a proteolytic enzyme made by the bacterium Serratia marcescens. This same bug was first found in the silkworm gut. The enzyme helps break down non-living tissue and can clear mucus and fibrin.
People take it after a soft tissue injury or when sinus congestion strikes. Others reach for it to ease minor joint ache or to calm swelling after surgery.
For body-wide effects, take it on an empty stomach. Take it with food when you want digestive support.
Skip this enzyme if you use blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin. The combination can raise bleeding risk. Stop taking it at least two weeks before a scheduled surgery. We do not know if it is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
