Violet refers to plants in the *Viola* genus, often *Viola odorata*. Leaves and flowers go into teas, extracts, or powders. The herb contains mucilage that coats and soothes the throat, making it a traditional demulcent for dry coughs. It also has mild expectorant properties. High-quality human studies are limited. Do not confuse violet with African violets (*Saintpaulia*), which have no medicinal use.
People take violet orally as a powder, tea, or extract, and sometimes apply it to the skin. Dosing varies by form. Allergic reactions can occur, especially for those sensitive to plants in the Violaceae family.
