Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps maintain vision, immune function, and skin. Retinol, the pre-formed version, absorbs directly into the body. Beta-carotene from plants must first be converted into active vitamin A. Taking it with a meal that contains fat improves uptake.
You can find vitamin A in liver, fish oils, eggs, and orange or yellow vegetables. The vitamin supports normal cell growth, differentiation, and the health of skin and mucous membranes.
High doses can cause toxicity, known as hypervitaminosis A. Do not exceed recommended intakes. Pregnant women should avoid taking vitamin A without a doctor's guidance because of an elevated risk of birth defects.
